My Uncle Dempsey Cabe
was a wonderful man. He was loving, caring, and could tell almost as many stories as Dad. Although he lived in Michigan and we (the Carlin Cabe family) lived in Western North Carolina, we saw him often. He visited his hometown for many family reunions, special occasions, funerals, vacations and other events. Sometimes he brought the rest of his family and sometimes he came alone (until he wasn’t able to drive alone). When he was in WNC, he tried to see as many friends and relatives as he could. I had moved away in 1972 but if I knew he was going to be there, I would try to come up for a visit. I always learned something new when I was there at the same time as he. Once when he brought Roger, I rode with them through Highlands to Brevard, NC. (home of Aunt Helen and Aunt Lillian). I had heard about an Inn that our grandfather (Ottis Cabe) had worked on but that was the first time I had ever seen it. As Uncle Dempsey grew older, he
still kept in touch. He always liked to send cards when someone was sick, lost a loved one, got married, had children or grandchildren, or spent time in the hospital. Until the last few months, I talked to him over the phone to catch up on his family. We had some good chats. He reminded me of Dad who passed away in 2014. I know they are enjoying their fellowship and one day we will see them again.
