Odell "Bud" Lee Walters' Obituary
Odell “Bud” Walters
November 5, 1938-July 6, 2026
Odell "Bud" Walters passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, hard work, and love for his family.
Born in Barlow, Kentucky, Bud was the beloved son of the late Herbert Allen Walters and Ada Mae Walters. He later moved to Michigan, where he graduated from Highland Park High School and then became a firefighter. He also attended University of Michigan Fire Academy. Bud answered the call to serve the city of Royal Oak, a career he loved deeply. After 32 years of dedicated service, he retired as Captain carrying with him countless memories of the profession that meant so much to him.
He was a lifelong resident of Royal Oak living in the first home they purchased as a couple in 1960. His love for Royal Oak continued after his retirement where he would frequently attend retired firemen’s breakfasts, retirement ceremonies and “Thirsty Thursday” get togethers.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Allen and Ada Mae Walters; infant son, Richard Anthony, his brothers, Herbert "Buck", Lonnie; and his sister, Leona "Tootsie".
He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Joann Walters; his loving daughter, Tammie; his son, Dave (Karen); and his cherished grandchildren, Luke, Adam, and Veronica, who brought him immense pride and joy. He also had several nieces and nephews who adored “Uncle Buddy”.
Beyond his career, Bud found happiness in the outdoors. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying nature, he appreciated the peace and beauty of the world around him. He enjoyed being a part-time farmer at his lifelong property in Evart and had a passion for woodworking/carpentry. He could often be found tackling any project that needed to be done. His craftsmanship, determination, and willingness to lend a helping hand were qualities that family and friends admired.
Those who knew Bud will remember him as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose strong work ethic, generous heart, and quiet strength touched the lives of many. His love for his family was unwavering, and the values he instilled through his example will continue to live on in those who knew and loved him.
Bud's memory will forever be treasured by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of service, kindness, and perseverance will never be forgotten.
